iOS App Profile: Motion Math Hungry Fish

Well, hello!  I hope you are all well-rested after a relaxing break over the festive period.

To kick off the new term, here is a review of a maths app called Hungry Fish that supports the learning of number bonds, and practises addition and subtraction skills.

The app comes in two versions, standard and pro, currently priced £1.99 and £3.99 respectively.  If you buy the £1.99 version, you have to faff about buying additional features – I’d recommend going for the “Pro” version, where all the features are automatically enabled.

I have used this many times with children to informally assess their knowledge of number bonds, and it has proved to be very engaging.  Basically, your ‘fish’ has a number – for example, 7.  He’s hungry, but can only eat 7s – there are plenty of 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s floating about but no 7s… what can be done??

If your learners successfully complete levels, they can customise their fish by changing its fins or its colour.

Take a look at this video to see the app in action:

Motion Math have a range of apps besides Hungry Fish – I haven’t tried them all, but if you have and have any feedback, please get in touch!
