iOS App Profile: Word Wizard

Word WizardWord Wizard is a nicely made app that practices letter/sound recognition and spelling.  It has two main functions – the “moveable alphabet” and “spelling quizzes”.

In “moveable alphabet”, learners use the iPad in much the same way as they would a magnetic board with letter magnets.  The letters are arranged alphabetically and vowels are coloured red.

In “spelling quizzes”, learners listen to an audio prompt and then spell out the word.  They can elect to hear the word again, or get a clue if they are struggling.  The app comes with a huge range of pre-made spelling tests, but there is also the function to create your own.

I like this app because it is easy-to-use, attractive, and is pretty flexible.  You can tailor it to your specific teaching requirements with a good range of settings, and there are a choice of different synthetic voices to choose from, including a “UK” voice.

The only downside is that there are no pictures accompanying any of the words, so no meaning is lent to any of the words – this app really is just for working on phonics and spelling, but it does that very well.

At the time of writing, this app is £1.99 in the app store.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this or any other app.
